Character Bio: Javier Bardem delivers a realistic, dead panned performance of Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas. The film tracks Arenas' life from a shy homosexual in Cuba under Castro's regime to an edgy, confident writer in New York. Bardem shows great range and diversity while portraying Arena's experiences, from the pain of imprisonment and abuse received in Cuba to the dramatic feeling of freedom during the Mariel Boatlift in 1980. Finally Bardem tackles the hardest task of all when he reenacts Arenas' last few days as his body deteriorates from AIDS. Bardem, a native Spaniard, shines as he nails Cuban inflections throughout the film. Academy voters are sure to take notice of this Spanish star's range and intensity, as well as his mastery of a dialect not his own.
