Character Bio: In "Traffic," Benicio Del Toro plays Javier Rodriguez, a Mexican policeman working on and around the border. After a huge drug bust, Mexico's number one crime fighter General Salazar asks him to work on his team. Rodriguez is trapped in the middle as corrupt officials and a drug cartel fight over control of the border drug traffic. He turns down wealth for honor; he resists the temptations of power and money. He only wants to make his country better and in the end bring down corrupt officials from the inside. To prepare for the role, Puerto Rican-born Del Toro worked with a dialect coach and spent time with police in Tijuana, learning the slang and getting a better perspective. His performance brings dimension and humanity to a character that could have fallen into a flat stereotype.
