He is a scheming, weak emperor that comes to the throne as a spoiled teen and wields his power ruthlessly and wantonly. He murders his father and orders General Maximus, his rival for the throne and favorite of murdered emperor, executed. He fails and earns the enmity of a man destined to become a great hero of Rome. Phoenix's Commodus is a sociopath with mercurial mood changes and psychotic tendencies. His portrayal of the emperor's unpredictable nature leaves even viewers uncomfortable with his presence on screen, wondering when he will explode.
