Character Bio: Judi Dench portrays Armande, an outspoken older woman who rents a shop and room to Vianne (Juliette Binoche), who unexpectedly sweeps into town to open a chocolate shop. Armande welcomes Vianne into the quiet, traditional French town and strikes up a friendship. Vianne just seems to know exactly what the unhappy widow needs, along with the rest of the town, which is slowly transformed during the film through Vianne's sweet concoctions. Not everyone in town welcomes Vianne's changes. Although Armande maintains a rough front throughout the film, she shows her vulnerability with her grandson, whom she loves dearly but is the son of her estranged daughter. Through chocolate and other magic, Armande is not only reunited with her grandson, but with her daughter as well. Dench's Armande is at the heart of the film.

"Crowe was not being rewarded for his performance in Gladiator, but rather his LAC, Insider, and Gladiator put together. Tom Hanks is going to win the oscar next year for Road to Perdition, Sam Mendez is no fluke. If you wanna whine about something winning that didn't deserve it, complain about Gladiator for best picture. Traffic wins oscars for directing, screenplay, and editing, not to mention del toro's for supporting actor and the SAG award for best ensemble. Why vote for Gladiator over Traffic when it wins the other awards? "
