Character Bio: In "Billy Elliot," Julie Walters is Mrs. Wilkinson, a chain smoking dance teacher in northern England who finds a talented young boy in her ballet class. She is drawn to the boy, Billy, and he brings her out of the day-to-day rut of a housewife. She becomes alive and excited again when she realizes he has a real gift for dance. She becomes a surrogate mother to Billy, whose mother is dead and who must hide the fact that he is dancing from his father and brother. She becomes a driving force in his life and encourages him to try out for the Royal Ballet in London. Walters portrays a tough, gruff woman with a seldom seen soft side.
